Brown Bear Hunting

Guided Brown Bear Hunting Trips

Brown Bear Hunting Alaska Brown bear hunting is an adventure virtually exclusive to Alaska. All but a small percentage are found in Alaska, and they are bigger here than anywhere else. Brown bears are loners (except females with cubs) and they are cunning. A frontier hunt for the big brown may be the most exciting big game hunt available.

Snow season, breeding season and salmon season
  • The spring hunt begins in April. The biggest bears are the first to come out of their dens. This is an excellent time to nab one, as there is still snow, making bears easier to track. You will probably be using snowshoes.
  • By May, you’ll be in lower elevations, because all of the bears have come out of their winter homes. Breeding season has started; the target is on the move, making it a remarkable time for brown bear hunting. Spring season usually ends by the first of June.
  • The fall hunts begin around Sept. 1st and finish at the end of November. It's eating time for the bears, and Alaskan salmon are running upstream to spawn. Brown bears are also loading up on berries for the winter. Two food locations increase your chance to go after a bear.

Combo hunts can be arranged in the fall
During your brown bear hunting pursuit in the fall season, you have the opportunity to take part in combination hunts for Dall sheep, moose, mountain goat and black bear. Like the bear, you can also fish for salmon!

How do I get there?
  • You fly into Anchorage, Valdez, or Cordova. Your transportation from there is handled, and may include a bush plane trip to the starting point of your hunt. We advise you to book yourself into your arrival city a day or two before your scheduled start of brown bear hunting, and plan to fly home a day or two after it ends. This is insurance against the variable Alaskan weather.
  • Your first “guided tour” will be to get your hunting license and game tag!

What’s it like?
  • You are provided food and lodging when in the field and all other necessary equipment. You are hunting and sleeping in the backcountry, in tents designed for Alaskan weather. You’ll be warm, dry and very comfortable at the end of a day of brown bear hunting.
  • You’ll enjoy plentiful home cooking.
  • The equipment and guides are first-rate, local experienced hunters. We also only take out limited numbers of guests at a time to keep the hunt as safe as possible, and to keep you comfortable.

What do I need to bring?
After you reserve your brown bear hunting excursion, we’ll give you a short list of things to bring along, primarily clothing recommendations. Make certain to bring the spirit of adventure, although if it’s in short supply at home you will breathe it in the moment your hunt begins.

We provide you with several options to get your trophy home. You have a choice of reputable taxidermists and expediters who make sure your trophy is properly handled and shipped. As far as meat, there are also a few good processors that can take care of your meat and ship it to your home- or you can freeze it and take some of it on the plane with you. Some hunters choose to leave it with their guide, as a sign of gratitude for an exceptional Alaskan frontier adventure.
